Through Driving Winds. Or Driving Through Winds.

Wind seems to be the theme of the day.  But first -- I have to say I love the Comfort Inn in Denver.  Not only did they have a free breakfast (biscuits and gravy, waffles, eggs, sausage.  okay, no bacon, but really.  cereal, muffins, yogurt, an assortment of juices and coffee), they also had a "Manager's Welcome" which featured free dinner!  And complimentary drinks!  (Three per customer.)  It was ballpark food -- hot dogs, chili, cheese sauce, chips, chicken fingers.  There were also baked potatoes and salad.  So we joined our other Comfort Inn guest/friends in the lobby and watched Wheel of Fortune while we enjoyed free dinner and wine.  Super awesome!

After breakfast it was into the horrible traffic of Denver to drive just a few miles to see the Denver Museum of Science and Nature.  Lucky us, we bought the ASTC Passport when we were at Lowell Observatory, so admission was free!  We did have to pay for the movie in the planetarium (Big Bird's One World, One Sky).  The clerk said "I just want you to know this movie is for children."  And I was like, "I know.  That's why we want to see it."  It was pretty cute.

We have found, though, that May seems to be school field trip month.  At the Rosemount Mansion yesterday we encountered a busload of tweens.  Today at the Museum we were surrounded by groups of children.  Mostly well-behaved, but the few who need to scream, run, yell at their friends, etc., make it a little annoying for the rest of us.

Dinosaurs!  Outside the Museum there are sculptures.  We arrived before opening, so we had time to practice our selfies.

It's a Snowmastadon!

This is Cassie's moose face.

A unicorn!  This was in the mythical creatures exhibit for some reason.  Huh.

And a dragon!

Our favorite parts of the Museum were the Space Odessy section (where there were loads of hands-on activities), the health section (also hands-on), and the gem section.  Those diamonds weren't real, but other gems were!

Not a big fan of the stuffed animal collections, but it was fun to see some of the Alaska animals up close and personal.  The sea lion is really huge.

After the Museum we stopped at a Target (our favorite!).  Cassie found the overalls she's been looking for in her size, we found some yummy salads in the deli to have for later, and then I was ready to get out of the Denver area.  The traffic really is horrible.

Fortunately for us, getting out of Denver at that particular time got us out JUST MINUTES ahead of the severe thunder storm and tornado warning.  We did get hit by some pretty massive hail and the rain was so dense for a few minutes that it was hard to see.  Too hard, even, to find a safe place to pull over, so I just kept my eyes on the line and went slowly until we were out of the storm.

The rain let up as we headed east, but the wind has not (now at 8 pm CST).  It has been crazy windy all day long. Lori texted me earlier today that it snowed 6 inches in Flagstaff.  We missed it!  I do feel like we have been protected all the way so far.  Keep those prayers coming!

We paid for a tent space at the WaKeeney KOA then found another Saloon to have dinner before coming back to set up the tent in the wind.

This Saloon is in an old hardware store.  Doesn't look like much from the outside, right?  The inside is pretty old-time-saloon looking.  Very high ceilings, and just inside the door is a Christmas tree that is probably 12 feet tall.  Dinner was good.  Country fried steak and garlic mashed potatoes for me, a chicken salad for Cassie.  The place was packed by the time we finished and headed back to set up the tent.

You can't see how windy it is in this picture, but the wind feels great and has dried out the tent nicely from our wet evening in Pueblo West.   This is our first KOA and will not be our last.  It is very nice!  Clean, lots of nice neighbors, showers, laundry facilities, and WiFi.  What more could a couple of girls want?

As far as finding my place in the world, I can so far rule out all of California, and pretty much any place with a population of more than 100,000.

Tomorrow we're headed to Dodge City and places south.

Most of the koa's have kamping kabins if you don't want to set up a tent. They are basic but keep you warm and dry.
