The rest of Wednesday was spent looking around Elizabeth City and Moyock. Elizabeth City has an interesting museum (Museum of the Albermarle). I enjoyed the exhibit on the history of tea. There were artifacts from Blackbeard's ship, the Queen Anne's Revenge, which you may recall we learned about from the oceanographer on Tuesday. We also learned about North Carolina's role in the Civil War. So that was worthwhile. And we had dinner at a seafood place with Jeannie and her two younger children (Hannah and Amon). Then we drove north toward Washington, D.C.
Today we parked the car and rode the Metro to the Smithsonian. First stop was the visitor's center/castle. The security guard there was very chatty. Mostly we went there to see where we should go next.
Our next stop: The Museum of American History. Here's President Cassie:
And Julia Childs' kitchen! There's a whole exhibit about food.
And Washington monument. We'll get there in the next couple of days. It was pretty rainy today and we spent a LOT of time in the Museum of American History.
Next stop: The Hirshorn Museum and Sculpture Garden. Some really intriguing art. Cassie spent some time pondering this piece...
A non-leaning tower of yellow Madonnas?
The building itself is art.
No pictures of the sculpture garden. It was raining, as I mentioned. I had put my phone away. We're going to try to start out earlier tomorrow as there is SO MUCH to see.
Panera for dinner. I ordered the chicken quinoa salad with bread. It came with neither chicken nor quinoa (they were training a new person. I took it back), and they were out of bread. Yes, Panera was out of bread.
