tastes like chicken

pretty bird, right? these darn starlings just won't give up. last spring they were building their nest in my roof, up under the eaves. they just poked holes through the screen that ventilates the attic. a friend covered up those holes from the outside. and now it's spring and the starlings are back.

so, i've tried talking to them, asked them politely to go live somewhere else. they did not listen, just squawked back loudly that they were planning to stay and bring friends. i asked to see their building permit and they don't comply. every morning they show up with their hammers and saws and commence building nests. i tried printing hawk pictures off the internet and taping them to the windows. didn't bother the starlings at all. i thawed chicken on the kitchen counter, in full view of the starlings. they just don't care.

then i bought an extension ladder and kent stapled some heavy screen over the holes at the back of the house. the birds just moved down to the next set of holes. twice! and then moved to the front of the house. yesterday kent covered all the holes from the end of the house over to the front door and this morning, those birds are BACK trying to get into the original holes they started last year.

kent says "they're tenacious little buggers, aren't they?" now he's thinking about getting a b-b gun. barbecue anyone?

We have those darn birds hanging out in our big tree out back, pooping all over our pool deck! Andrew has shot them with a pellet gun and seems to scare them away for a while..... then they come back.

Try hanging strips of aluminum the reflection from them may scare them away.

If that doesn't work try this.
12 Dove breast (substitute your starlings)
1/4 cup cider vinegar
3/4 cup all porpoise (hahahaha) flour
2 teaspoons salt
1/2 teaspoon black pepper
2 Tablespoons butter
Fresh cilantro for garnish.

Rinse the dove breast inside and out with vinegar and pat dry. Dredge the breast in a mixture of flour, salt and pepper.
Heat the butter in a large skillet and saute the breast over medium heat until golden brown. Cover and steam for approximately 10 minutes.
Place breast on platter (that would be the dove/starling breast) op each breast with Tequila lime butter. Garnish with cilantro.

Tequila Lime butter
6 tablespoons butter
2 tablespoons chopped green onion
1 teaspoon chopped garlic
1 1/2 tablespoons chopped fresh cilantro
2 tablespoons flour
1 1/4 cup half and half
1/8 teaspoon white pepper
1/2 teaspoon salt
1/4 cup tequila
1/4 lime juice
1 teaspoon lime zest for garnish

Melt 2 tablespoons butter in small sauce pan medium low heat. Add green onion, garlic and cilantro. Saute until onions are tender.
Sprinkle flour into pan and stir on, cook for 2 minutes, Add half and half, white pepper and salt. Mix well. Add remaining butter tequila, and lime juice. Whisk until butter is incorporated into sauce. Garnish with lime zest.

another fun idea is a three man slingshot and water baloons, accuracy is not that great but shooting water baloons at 70 mph at birds is great fun. If you come by our shop you will find very few pigeons and if you do they are on the far sides of the trees.

if you have time, the Funkey Monkeys have a song called "Tastes Like Chicken." you can listen to it on their website: www.funkymonkeys.net just click the "next" button on the Funkey Monkey Radio until you get to the song (not the "live" version, it's not as good).

a couple of our other favorites by the band: You Are Cute, I'd Like A Banana, and Don't Poopy In Your Pants.
